Something kind of wonderful

The missing out on something is rarely used in a positive context, so I often wonder whether the fact that I don’t fill my every waking hour reading blogs, tweeting, posting my opinions on various notice boards, updating my status on various social and business networks or signing up to join a plethora of forums whether I am missing out on something kind of wonderful.

These things only take a few minutes so surely I could do more of it. After all it is important for business and vital for a fulfilling social life, so I must be trading one level down from the happiness everyone else is experiencing.
So I decided to give it a go. As there are only so many hours in the day, and I already have a pretty full day, something would have to give. I then started thinking about what I would compromise on to be able to indulge in the on line passion of so many. Would it be my morning read of the paper on the train in, or the morning call with the kids before they go to school, or the ridiculously childish emails and txts I exchange with my friends, or the catch up call(s) with my wife, or maybe reading the trade mags on line over lunch, or the forty winks I get on the train going back home, or maybe the compulsory trampolining with the kids when I get back or the meal I have with the wife or the book I read before it falls on my face as I nod off. On reflection I thought all that was too good to lose so the only thing that could shift is work, so I have resolved to work less and blog and network more. The debate about the value of blogs to work needs to be resolved, but I am sure someone who has spent years of their life developing an algorithm to answer just this question.

Next week – blogs are dragging creativity and thinking into a bog of mediocrity.
