I’m a happy little Vegemite

I love Vegemite. Well, I am Australian after all. I despise Marmite and have found myself becoming an active campaigner for Vegemite in the ‘Vegemite versus Marmite’ debate. I’ve even joined the ‘Vegemite on Toast’ Facebook Group which currently has 46,817 members.

As Oscar Wilde said, “There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about”. Therefore could this age-old global debate be benefiting both brands?

A research company in the UK recently released the results from a survey that identified Britain’s most-loved, most-hated and who-cares brands. The overall conclusion of this study was that brands that fail to stir up ANY kind of passion or loathing from consumers should be the most concerned. Brands that nobody cares about are in danger of disappearing quietly from our homes. The most-loved and most-hated brands that provoke heated debate and discussion (down the pub and on various social networks and forums) will continue to be the talked about, and highly successful, this research reveals.

My love affair with Vegemite goes back to my childhood and my fondest memories are of singing the “Happy Little Vegemite” song at the breakfast table.

Vegemite versus Marmite continues. So, who’s with me?

As a good British gal, I was always a loyal Marmite fan and would not be told otherwise. However, then I moved in with an Aussie and a Kiwi and was introduced to Vegemite and scrambled egg on toast……the stuff dreams are made of!
I’m ashamed to say I’m a convert, yes it was that easy. Hmmm guess I’m not as loyal to the old British brand as I thought!

You either love it or hate it and I HATE Marmite. Vegemite tastes rather different and I must say that I don’t hate (a very tiny layer) on my toast on the odd mornings!

In all honesty, my taste buds reject both brands but if I had to choose it would certainly be Vegemite!!!

I’m with YOU all the way on this!

Vegimite is the stuff dreams are made off. It turns the sorriest, hardest bread role into a much coveted meal, it is the perfect band-aid for homesickness, it is the comfort food that cures any hangover. Vegimite – I will always, always love you.

I’ve never tried it but I’m willing to take a taste test.

Marmite is an imposter. It let’s down the salty yeast spread category. The thing that’s so weird about Marmite is that it’s ALMOST Vegemite, but it’s got this weird consistency and it goes all stringy when you put a knife into it.

I really think it’s time British people just conceded they haven’t got it right this time and defaulted to Vegemite across the board – don’t you?

I am proud to say I love and own a jar of both. I also have a soft spot for Promite which is the South Australia equivilant (I think). Does that make me boring and safe to not take a ’side’?
